Economy and Job Market

Lafayette is a thriving economic center in Louisiana as it boasts a well-trained workforce, unmatched quality of life, and a favorable environment for the business community. The city has a risk-taking spirit and plenty of technological advantages, all which contribute to it being named as a Top 10 place in the South for the “creative class” in a recent issue of Southern Business and Development Magazine.

In the past, the economy of the region was largely based on the oil and gas industry but in recent years the economy has diversified into a variety of sectors. Some of the most popular sectors are mining, construction, manufacturing, transportation, wholesale, and retail. Since the community is full of bright entrepreneurs, there are many small businesses supporting the economy. In fact, 98% of Lafayette’s businesses have fewer than 100 employees.
